Episode 19

Wait Wait..... Don’t Tell Me
On February 28, 2009 show Mo Rocca had to apologize to all the angry Ravelers for saying “knitted sweaters are always itchy.” His apology went something like this, “Last week I used insensitive and inflammatory language including the “I” word to describe homemade sweaters I sincerely regret offending anyone even if there is an explanation. You see 20 years ago when I was an exchange student in Kito I stayed with a host family of alpaca farmers. The Garcia family was never less than gracious their home was small so I was forced to bunk with there teenage son Chicho and so for month afterwards I couldn’t stop scratching myself. None of this makes my recent comments any less offensive, so please accept my apology.

Ravelry.com received a shout out for the group of knitters that has agreed to join together and knit Mo Rocca a sweater which on the show he agreed to model whatever sweaters were sent to him! On the Ravelry group it looks like the knitters will be presenting the sweater on April 9th so tune in to NPR!!!

Episode 8

This week I have stumbled upon something very interesting and that is CoulurMart. They sell high quality yarns for less mainly specializing in Cashmere and Silk!!!

Other News word on the street is now that the new Yarn Harlot book, “Free Range Knitter” isn’t due to be out till September 25. So everyone keep your fingers crossed and pray that it shows up!!!

Worlds fastest knitter on the Knit Picks podcast is different lady than I was previously talking about and so apparently the other lady is no longer the worlds fastest knitter.

Cast On:
Abby-
Patty-Nothing yet but I plan on starting my cabled tunic this weekend!! So stayed tuned for my adventures into cables!!!!

Cast Off:
Abby: One vanilla sock
Patty: February Lady Sweater Take Two!!!! (finally!!! and as a side-note it is possible to be mentally sane after making a finger-weight sweater!) I managed to finish Clapotis just before we podcasted!!!

Okay so this week i was clicking around on the internet and saw that knitting came up on a site called drugs.com so naturally I had to see what this is about and I found this definition: A non-medical term denoting the process of union of the fragments of a broken bone or of the edges of a wound.
Hub Mills Factory outlet in Lowell

Okay I am excited about glow in the dark yarn this week because Bernat came out with six different shades of glow and the dark yarn. I was listening to the Knitter’s Wading Pool and found out about this yarn!!
Another thing I am excited about is that in our area the craft stores have started carrying a lot more yarn, especially several varieties of sock yarns!! I will be giving reviews of these yarns as I knit with them (I have to start knitting on the cheap due to the ever increasing cost of school!)

I would also like to give a shout out back to two different podcasts.
Changelings Knit & Spin is back after a hiatus
SockTart for the shout out about our shout out to them!!

“Being a good knitter is 3% talent and 97% not being distracted by the internet”

Last week there was a discussion on the worlds fastest knitter and which style she knits in and she is a women from Scotland. I could not find her knitting style online however she did have some impressive stats. “Hazel Tindall retained her title of World’s fastest knitter after completing 262 stitches in three minutes in a needle match in the United States.” (That’s just over 87 stitches per minute) Now more shocking was this quote given by Tindall, ““The future doesn’t bode well for hand-knitting. There are some still doing it, but I think the average age is about 70. Anyone under 50 hasn’t grown up with the ethos that you shouldn’t sit hand-idle.”

Apparently there have been some problems with the pattern (I just went with my mistake and made it my own) The answer to all the problems was basically go back and read the instructions very, very carefully. Everyone can thank Kristoemily on Ravelry she was the one who ended up sorting it out for all us confused knitters!!
And she cast on for the February Lady Sweater but got the wrong weight yarn! After lots of math there is progress!

Cast On
Patty- A totally made up market bag. I tried to follow the pattern in Bag Style, however, I hit a few road bumps and ended up making my own pattern that was easier for me! I also cast on for Elisa Nest tote (the same that Abby made) I also used Classic Elite Flash yarn. Then I cast on for four preemie hats which flew off my needles!! (It was a great stash busting project)
Abby-Thermal by Laura Chau from Knitty Winter ’06 and more headbands.

Cast Off
Patty-I finished my spunky eclectic socks, my totally made up market bag, four preemie hats, my monkey socks (finally)
Abby- Didn’t cast off anything : (

Drop Spindle Spinning
This week both Abby and I starting spinning on a drop spindle. We both bought gorgeous handmade drop spindle from our local yarn store. There we also picked up our roving!
Wanna learn?? Check out these great You Tube video series at <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gXTWgMeMgI" target="_blank" class="userlink"><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gXTWgMeMgI" target="_blank" class="userlink">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gXTWgMeMgI</a></a>
Megan is fabulous she has a three part series covering all the steps of spinning yarn!!
Another great help is the Beginning Spinner’s group on Ravelry
I also found the Teach yourself Visually Spinning was very helpful and informative not only for drop spinning but also, for spinning on a wheel.

Contest Prize Winner is………Jetgirl313
